What is Azad Jammu & Kashmir?
What is established
Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) is a self-governing territory administered by Pakistan on the western side of the Line of Control. It has its own constitution, president, prime minister, legislature, and courts, while remaining connected to Pakistani institutions in defined ways.
What is disputed or contested
The political status of Jammu and Kashmir as a whole remains internationally contested. Competing official narratives treat AJK as a liberated territory, a Pakistani-administered area, or part of a larger unresolved dispute. Dhār does not flatten those claims into a single political conclusion.
Terminology used by Dhār
The archive uses “Azad Jammu & Kashmir” and “AJK” as the names of the territory whose records it collects, and “Line of Control” for the ceasefire line as commonly documented.
Why that terminology is used
Those terms match the institutions, gazetteers, and source documents most of the corpus cites. Using them is a documentation choice, not a recognition of a final political settlement.
