What is established

AJK is linguistically and culturally diverse. Pahari and neighbouring linguistic traditions, Urdu, and other languages appear in documents, oral memory, and public culture.

What is disputed or contested

Language names, scripts, and community labels are sometimes used as political claims. Census and activist figures for speakers do not always agree.

Terminology used by Dhār

Records keep original-language titles where possible and treat translations as separate fields. Community names follow the terms people use for themselves in the cited source, with a note when another label is common in official texts.

Why that terminology is used

Mixing translation into a single uncontrolled field would erase the original record. Dhār’s job is to preserve that distinction.
